An Insider Look at Truss’s Hiring Process

Interviewing for a new job can be like a terrible dating scenario. You apply for a job, get an interview, and then never hear back. Sound familiar? At Truss, we’ve spent a lot of time refining our interview process so that it’s clear, comprehensive, and as unbiased as possible. We want it to be a great experience for everyone involved.

What we look for

Most importantly, we look for candidates who are skilled at what they do and always seek the highest standard. We care about communication skills and empathy. And we aim to hire the right person, not necessarily the perfect person.

We look for candidates that revel in complexity and don’t shy away from difficult problems, both technical and strategic. Candidates who are highly collaborative in nature (with both their colleagues and clients) and embrace diversity in people, voices, and ideas will do well at Truss.

We encourage action without fear, initiative, and applaud those who will always make the best move, not the safest one. We are constantly working to create a supportive workplace where we practice radical candor and humility and value those who practice self-awareness and have outstanding situational awareness.

Our interview process

Since it feels pretty great to know what to expect when applying for a job, here is a breakdown of our hiring process. We follow this process for all roles at Truss, regardless of position or level of experience.

Application received

Once we receive your application, you will receive an “application received” email, where we outline what you can expect.

Digital review

The first thing we’ll do is complete a digital review of your materials to make sure that you’ve got the basics in terms of minimum required experience.

Phone screen

Then, we’ll reach out to schedule a 30-minute phone interview with one of our team members, which will be a cursory assessment of communication skills, character, experience, and area of expertise.

Second interview

This is a 60-minute conversational interview with two Trussels who will dive deeper than the initial phone screen. We’ll discuss specifics about the position you are applying for, your past professional experiences, current challenges you face, and what you’re looking for in your next role. We encourage questions, so be prepared to ask questions about Truss.

Work sample

After that, we’ll send you a request for a work sample; you’ll receive a problem and whatever materials you’ll need to solve it. You’ll have a week to review the problem, generate a solution, and email your response to us. Ideally, this will take no more than four hours of your time. We’ll review your submission and schedule a day for you to speak with us again.

Final interview(s)

Final interviews consist of two 30-60 minute conversations. During these interviews, we will discuss your work sample, skills and any additional questions you have. If you haven’t met any of our three founders or the relevant practice lead in the process thus far, you’ll have the opportunity to do so in one of these interviews.

Offer

Lastly, we’ll discuss internally before extending you a formal offer. Our benefits overview, salary, level and an anonymized salary sheet will be shared on offer so a candidate can make an informed decision.

We might end the process early if we don’t have a position well suited for you because we want to respect everyone’s time. We will notify you via email if this is the case.

This process has been adapted over time, so if you’ve applied in the past, your experience may have differed. As we say in our values, we’re continually improving via marginal gains.
