Trussel Tuesday Spotlight

Headshot of UX designer

Trussel Tuesday: Madison Ross-Ryan

As a human centered and fully remote company we are always looking for ways to learn more about the people who make up our team. At the heart of Truss lies our incredibly talented and dedicated staff who consistently show up and get things done. Each Trussel comes with their own set of unique skills that contribute to the diversity and betterment of our organization.

This month’s Trussel Tuesday features Madison-Ross Ryan. Madison is one of our UX designers based out of Washington, DC. She’s been with Truss over a year now and has been an integral part of the projects she’s on. We love getting to work with her and getting to see her dog, Meatball on zoom meetings!

How long have you been with the company?

A little over a year

What Practice are you in?

Design & Research

What made you join Truss?

I joined Truss because I was looking for a company that served the American people, and specifically one who valued research just as much as design. Those two arms of UX are intertwined, and I found Truss to embody the perfect balance of research and design work, all while being in civic tech.

What is your favorite part about working in your particular field?

My favorite part of working in UX design and research is getting to talk to real people, hearing about their real problems, and brainstorming a million different ways we could try to help them... which I guess is three things?

What is your favorite Truss memory?

My favorite Truss memory was meeting up with the Chicago designers last summer! It was so nice to put faces to Zoom backgrounds and connect in real life.

What has surprised you most about working here?

Something that surprised me the most about working at Truss (and being fully remote) is how much I felt like I knew my colleagues and clients even after never meeting them in person. Last September I traveled to Washington, DC, to meet up with some Trussels and our clients at the Directorate for Digital Services and I felt like I had known them for years.

Which one of our values resonates with you most?

The value that resonates most with me is Pay Attention. As designers working in government, it's incredibly important to pay attention to not just the work you are creating, but also the people you are affecting. Government work affects everyone, and it's our responsibility to design as much as possible for positive impact.
